Living Building Challenge 7 Series Event 2: The art of material transparency (Garrawang)

This is the second event in the Melbourne Living Building Challenge (LBC) 7 part event series which will focus on each of the 7 Living Building Challenge Petals. Each featuring LBC case studies led by knowledgeable and inspiring advocates for change.

The Healthy Buildings Network

The second event focuses on how the materials we build with can affect our well being as much as the food we eat, the water we drink and the air we breathe.

Join us to hear from Aurecon’s Building Physics and ESD Engineer Taylor Williams, and Shaw Contract’s Commercial Manager, Dave Moolman sharing their project and organisational experience, approaches and perspectives on materials. Why we need to rethink our approach to materials selection and advocate for material transparency to create healthier environments for all.

Living Building Challenge – Materials Petal

The Living Building Challenge™ is a building certification program, advocacy tool and philosophy that defines the most advanced measure of sustainability in the built environment possible today and acts to rapidly diminish the gap between current limits and the end-game positive solutions we seek. The Living Building Challenge  (LBC) poses the question, “What if every single act of design and construction made the world a better place?”

LBC’s seven performance standards, or Petals, align with the metaphor of our buildings being designed to emulate flowers – harvesting energy and water in place, using locally available materials, connecting to and enhancing the ecosystem in which they exist, and being beautiful.

This Petal recognising the importance of eliminating the use of worst in class materials/ chemicals with the greatest impact to human and ecosystem health. The LBC is the first green building system to state that projects cannot contain any of the ‘Red list materials or chemicals’.
