Remote Location Builds Require Foresight

Environmental and geographical considerations applied when designing the new sport & community Pavilion for the historic Pilbara town of Tom Price.

Given the opportunity to develop such an important community facility is a privilege especially in an environment that is as remote and demanding as Western Australia’s Pilbara region. Tom Price is historically one of the most well know mining towns in the country and was very much a sports orientated community and deserving of a new facility.

The sports pavilion and community centre was designed for the Shire of Roebourne and throughout the design development stage our responsibility was to develop this sporting complex specific to the needs of this community. Its purpose was to provide a place that could be flexible in its use to celebrate and reflect on sporting activities while strengthening the community and personal connections.

The sports pavilion set between the redness of the desert and the intense green grass of the playing fields provides a relatively subdued but still long lasting iconic landmark that represents the strength of the community and all that Tom Price represents.

Key Challenges

i2C were approached by a Perth based construction firm to take on the design development and construction phase of this project.

Like most remote sites, the key challenges required careful planning by the lead contractor and the design team so that construction risks affecting time could be minimised on site.

1. The challenges were to design a pavilion for a smooth construction sequence that would allow trades to undertake the programmed work without revisiting the site.

2. Appropriate selection of building materials and finishes to withstand the extreme environmental conditions such as sub topical weather activities, fluctuating desert temperatures, and sun exposure.

3. Maintain the concept design of the large triangulated canopies on four sides of the building to create interest in the building with a replication of geometry in the façade or building plan.

4. Client’s requirement to provide a facility suitable for the various sporting codes as well as a facility that was adaptable for use as a community function space with fully equipped kitchens and bars.

As a design and construct project, the builder engaged i2C at the design development phase to provide the consultancy services through to project completion. At the early stage of the project, small design meetings were attended by all of the lead contractor’s designers who were familiar with the services and infrastructure and conditions in the Pilbara.

Due to the remoteness of the site the design resolution relied upon the as built surveys, existing site surveys and geo tech testing. Typically a mining area’s prime hazard is the unknown conditions of the site and the lead contractor discovered that the site contained waste materials from the town. This had to be dealt with via the structural design, piling and excavation of the site in readiness for building commencement.

Outcome Driven

The vision of the precinct was to build a pavilion that was functional, attractive and inviting to the community and with an upgrade of the surrounding landscape and plantings, the precinct would pull together the once neglected area to give the town a sense of sporting pride and enthusiasm.

Tied in with colour and concrete panel variations to the façade the overall appearance contrasted immensely against the dry red environment. The ground floor club rooms, the first floor function room with a bar and the open tiered pavilion seating now offers the users the new vantage point to enjoy the sporting activities.

The sports pavilion offers the community the modern sporting facilities that were so desperately needed. With the Shire contributing to the surrounding landscaping, the pavilion now sits in a prominent location at the edge of a lush green oval with a vibrant red natural surround.
